Coconut Coir

Coconut coir is sourced from the husks of coconuts, shredded and compacted into ‘bricks’. Praised for its superior water retention and notable contamination resistance, it has become a favoured bulk substrate among home mushroom growers.

No sterilisation is necessary; instead, a straightforward pasteurisation process, commonly referred to as the ‘bucket-tek’ method can be employed. This involves adding boiling water, mixing once fully hydrated, allowing it to cool, and then inoculating with the chosen mushroom spawn. When combined with vermiculite and gypsum, it forms the well-known hydrated CVG substrate.

  • Appropriate for cultivators of all sizes.
  • Unlimited shelf life when stored dry.
  • Perfect for novices.
  • Contamination resistant.
  • Suitable as a casing layer.

These coir bricks feature a lower salt content compared to others on the market, facilitating faster colonisation and producing more substantial mushroom yields. Often combined with vermiculite, they create a light, airy substrate with excellent water retention capabilities, which further enhances mushroom production.

In addition to mushroom cultivation, they are frequently utilised in gardening and are entirely biodegradable.

Each brick typically weighs between 550g – 650g. Blocks weigh approx. 5kg.

Light and fluffy growing medium. EAsy to hydrate. I ordered more than needed as it keeps indefintely and can be used in my greenhouse too. great for strawberries and ends up in my worm farm after mushroom harvest.

  2. Mel & Steve

Decent sized brick of coir, well packaged, speedy delivery, can be sawn up to size. – Thanks

  3. Alex Heath

Great stuff! Mushies love it. Add boiling water in a tub until you reach field capacity. Hydrates almost instantly. Cover and leave to pasteurise. Mix in spawn when cool approx. 4-6 hours otherwise you will kill the mycelium.

  4. Lez

Order arrived promptly. Perfect for mushrooms cultivation with the excess used in the garden for potting up plants. Great water retention. Expands with little effort in water, took around 20 minutes to fully hydrate and break down. Can be hydrated in one go, but I used a rake to break it up and speed up hydration. Can be broken up by hand.

  5. stu

  6. I grow mushrooms

  7. Colleen

  8. Siltone

Hydrate in wheelbarrow and cover. I'm just getting into mushroom cultivation but used to use this stuff to help with my heavy clay soil in garden. Multiple uses. Happy customer

  9. Paula Lucas

Can be a bit dusty if breaking chunks off but to be expected. Fast delivery. No problems.

  10. Natalie

Highly compressed brick of coir. Seems to do the job. I'll update after my first harvest!

  11. Lorkin

    Cheap and good quality

  12. R Harvey

Creates an ideal substrate for cubes, can be composted after. It's the outer shell of coconuts, very contamination resistant. I normally hydrate then mix with a bit of Gypsum for some added nutes. Been using this stuff for years as you can do away with expensive lab equipment. Buket tek is best, good yields. Thanks (use boiling water to hydrate then allow to cool, cold water doesn't work as well)
